Maddie's 5th Birthday (and Unicorn Day)

When we discovered that National Unicorn Day was just a couple days before Maddie's birthday, we knew it was meant to be. Time to celebrate! After home school in the morning, we had lots of fun planned. The girls each even each had a unicorn outfit picked out and I bought unicorn decorations at the store.

Dixie's was too small for Blade (and for Dixie).

While the little kids were napping the big girls made unicorn headbands.

Then Lance came home and we went over to the park. Feeding ducks and playing and practicing softball and roller skating and frisbee for the win.

Back home for unicorn ice cream cones! And some rousing rounds of pin the horn on the unicorn before finishing off the day with a unicorn movie on Netflix.

Maddie's real birthday was on Monday. First thing: a "balance scooter" for her!

The Primary birthday sign was a fun surprise when she left for school.

We passed the morning playing and baking.

That afternoon we took the new scooter for a spin to the park. Daddy surprised us there!

We kept things more low-key this year.

She got a new sleeping bag, camp chair, and Camelbak from us- hopefully they will be put to good use this summer!

Her Wellie Wisher American Girl doll from Gigi was last- and got the loudest squeals for sure.

Camille is a member of the family now.

Time for candles.

Cake face!

Some things about Maddie at age 5:
~she off-the-charts big still: 45.5 inches tall (95th percentile) and 48 lbs (90th percentile)
~wears size 6 or 7 clothes and size 11 shoes
~same exact height and shoe size as Daryn (I've started calling them the twins and they will be sharing a wardrobe this summer)
~is getting to be an excellent reader- we work on it every day. She is just starting to read on her own without supervision- and in her head!
~she LOVES school and is very social- she makes new friends instantly
~is obsessed with Dixie and Blade and always wants to play with them. She is sad that Dixie is too big and wiggly for her to carry anymore but loves that she can actually play with her.
~is always up for an adventure but is less of an adrenaline junkie than her older sisters, and I think she might be scared of heights, although she says she isn't
~is starting to write more notes and almost always gets her b's and d's right- for a long time she signed everything Mabbie.
~is an excellent sleeper- goes right to bed, sleeps for 11.5-12 hours, and hops right up in the morning with a cheery face.
~has a very healthy appetite, as well as a sweet tooth
~she never gets tired of playing at the park- she could play for hours and hours
~still struggles with speech- we had her evaluated and she didn't qualify for therapy but they gave us some things to work on- mostly s. When she tries she can do it right.
~loves karate and is excited to go to class every time.
